Being retired means that I have more than 15 minutes on any given day to read.  I am currently reading a book about York England during the mid to late 14th century.  This period is inclusive of the Black Death and other assorted horrors.  The story takes place in York predominantly and I would like to know where this is in relation to where you (Mark and Major) live.  John Thoresby is the Archbishop of York.

The 1300's normally have not interested me but now I'm diving in.

At least my handsome Saxon monk isn't some beetle-browed caveman, but I had thought he'd be blonde as most Germanics are.

Also, does Seaxmund's Ham still exist?

Saxmundham in Suffolk is a thriving little town today, not too far from where Flash lived.

So the Saxons were down around London.  I need to bring out my medieval map.  Duh.  Why didn't I think of that?

The Saxons settled all over England, but the greatest concentration was in the south and east. The further north and west they went they found themselves in conflict with the warlike Celts etc.

The Saxon Kingdoms established in the 6th century were gradually absorbed by their larger neighbours until only two remained - Wessex in the south and Mercia in the Midlands, eventually Wessex emerged as the sole Kingdom in the 10th century thus creating England. I should add that the Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria in the north was taken over by the Vikings in the 9th century and was the last to be added to Wessex, also in the 10th century. Is the story set in the mid 7th century? If so it might mention Wulfhere, King of Mercia 658-75. He has legendary links with my home town.

Mark, that's exactly where we are - mid-7th Century.  Wufhere is the king, so tell the story of his link to your home town.

The link is entirely legendary. At school we were taught that Bury Bank, an ancient hillfort north of the town, was the site of Wulfherechester one of the residences of Wulfhere the pagan King of Mercia and that around 665 his two sons Wulfad and Rufin converted to Christianity after they met St Chad whilst out hunting. Wulfhere was so incensed that he chased them down and killed them. In his remorse he buried them under a huge cairn of stones around which a town grew - Stone.

For years I believed this until I looked into it and found out it was all fantasy. Wulfhere never lived at Bury Bank, he never had sons named Wulfad and Rufin and no cairn ever existed. It was a tale made up in the 12th century to draw pilgrims to Stone Priory which was founded by the Augustinians in the 1140s. The only factual aspects are that Wulfhere and St Chad were real.

Oddly my local church, St Michael's since 1758, was rededicated to St Michael and St Wulfad a few years ago even though St Wulfad is entirely fictitious. Perhaps the vicar at the time was still trying to attract pilgrims/tourists as his predecessors were 850 years ago.

Wulfad and Rufin are official Saints even though they never existed in reality. Their Saints' Day is 24 July, an important date in Stone's history as it was on 24 July 1251 that it became a recognized town with the granting of a market charter.

Any mention of his real and actual daughter Werburgh? Some references state she was born in Stone (Wulfherecester), but that's another piece of fiction born out of the monks at Stone Priory in the 12th/13th century to get pilgrims visiting. The actual site of Wulfherecester has yet to be discovered or it could mean his entire territories which over time has been misinterpreted as referring to a single site. She certainly lived however and was initially buried at Hanbury in Staffordshire in 700 before being reinterred at Chester nearly 200 years later. Her shrine, what little survived the Reformation, has been reconstructed in Chester Cathedral.

I went to St Andrews over 20 years ago. There's a tunnel you can crawl along that was hacked out in the 1540s, when the castle was under siege, by the attackers trying to undermine the walls. 20 years ago I was just about able to crawl along it to a cavern at the end. Today I've put on a little weight and I'm not as bendy as I was in my 30s so I wouldn't try it now. Once in I had to go to the end because there's no room to turn around until you reach the cavern, luckily I'm not claustrophobic.

I read where they say a lot of the stone from there was used later to build other structures in the surrounding area. It was the largest church in ever built in Sotland and must have been something to see when first built. Quite an old grave yard and that alone would be something to explore. I'm the same Mark. Would not of thought twice about doing a bit of crawling in runes or caves when I was younger, but that feeling has long passed now.

The feeling is still there, but the physical ability to do it has diminished. Today I'd look at the hole you have to descend then I'd look at my stomach and decide that it would be too tight a fit.

The tunnels under St Andrews Castle. Not high enough to stand up in especially if you're over six feet tall.

There is no mention of Wulfhere's daughter in the book I'm reading, but I can see where a legend could have been carved.  Apparently, some of the kings at that time had serious disagreements over their children converting to what was then referred to as the "new faith".  There are very interesting references to, for example, weddings and funerals mixing pagan and Christian rites.

At the top of the High Street are some railings which can be opened out into gates to close the street off to traffic. They are decorated with the story of the martyrs Wulfad and Rufin and look pretty impressive.

I've just got back from the Border country, which is the belt between England and Scotland. I've never touched that area before, which is a shame, as it is stunning countryside, with long rolling hills and valleys. We passed right up the Lake District, from south to north, where I've never been before either and that is the most glorious place on the planet. We toddled off to see Hadrian's wall and I was reminded of the words from the film, the life of Brian, spoken by Michael Palin, when he said..... they don't mess about those Romans..... and he's right. The complexity of such an undertaking is bewildering and the first thing you think of is....what the bloody hell were they thinking of and where the hell did they get all this stone? It's tough stuff, like granite, which has to be shaped by hand, billions of blocks of it. You can see in many of the old houses in the area, the same stone, which must have been stripped from the wall in earlier centuries to build them, like off the shelf stone. We did call into the savage lands (Scotland) with a run into Dumfries, which we came out of faster than we went in and drove along the Solway estuary back over the border. It was empty, like a lot of Scotland is, as London has a larger population than Scotland. We passed by John Paul Jones cottage coming back, so I stopped and had a piss up the wall.

Just inside the English border at Burgh-by-Sands there's a monument in the middle of a field; it marks the spot where Edward I died in his tent in 1307 on his way to invade Scotland yet again.

There's a similar field on the Scottish island of Kerrera where Alexander II died in his tent in 1249, but there's no monument.

For the Edward I photo I was able to cut and paste from My Pictures as Pete suggested, but only yesterday did it work.
