Being retired means that I have more than 15 minutes on any given day to read.  I am currently reading a book about York England during the mid to late 14th century.  This period is inclusive of the Black Death and other assorted horrors.  The story takes place in York predominantly and I would like to know where this is in relation to where you (Mark and Major) live.  John Thoresby is the Archbishop of York.

The 1300's normally have not interested me but now I'm diving in.

The time plates have shifted and I now find myself in Ireland in the year 664AD.  The author is Peter Tremayne and I've just discovered his Sister Fidelma series.  This author gives an approximate 3 1/2 page explanation of Ireland in the 7th century.  E.g., it was THE center of learning, women were equal to men in every respect including primogeniture, religious houses were cohabitable and the Law was Brehon.

Christianity was not prevalent everywhere and there is an ongoing argument over the Roman rules and the Brehon rules (we know how that went).  Many parts of Ireland still follow the pagan ways but Christianity is slowly replacing them.  The teachings of Paul of Tarsus are making their way into the abbeys.

Oddly, I feel very comfortable in this time period.

Nigel Tranter has written many novels on Scottish history right back to St Columba in the 6th century who came over from Ireland; the early chapters are set in Ireland. In his novels set a couple of centuries later he describes the battle between Paganism and Christianity and later Romish Christianity v Columban which wasn't finally settled until the 11th century.

The first novel starts with that exact thing, a synod held in Northumbria in 664.

I've had a number of people, over the years, come to my house whilst I'm reading and say to me.... geezus, you read some pretty weird stuff and I thought, why the F are you on about but after listening to you two, I now know what they meant.

Shula, if Major doesn't want to be educated about the spread of Christianity in the outer regions of the British Isles 1400 years ago we can't force him.
Nigel Tranter, who died in 2000, wrote many novels covering almost the entire spread of Scottish history from the 6th century onwards. His novel about Macbeth makes a refeshing change fom Shakespeare's version.

Would that I could find someone like your old neighbor, Major.  I would beg for an apprenticeship.  As it is, I do use some of the tried and true herbs, like valerian (nature's valium), chamomile, mint and lemon balm.

Valium?? They are now treating opioid addition with herbs and having very good results. We know the herb as marijuana.

They advertise Turmeric on American TV for joint pain which is also a spice and when my wife ask could she try it to her Doctor the doctor said no because she's on blood thinners and Turmeric contains aspirin.

So before you try any home remedies check with your Pharmacist or Doctor. Actually the Pharmacist is probably up more on what things contain that your doctor is.

Only some what related. While at Anne's house in Green Gables I was touring her two story farm house and a group of Japanese of all ages where moving through with me. They pointed at the chamber pots under the bed and I knew they didn't have a clue what they were. I explained what they were for to one young lady and she would pass on down the line to the rest what it was, and then the cameras started clicking.  Next I told her about the people using oil lambs for lighting in the late 1800's and that the well was outside where they got there water from. Even the old cook and parlour stoves fascinated them. Each time I told the girl about something different she would pass it on down the line and then the cameras would start clicking all over again. I should have stood at the exit door with a tin cup in my hand to help pay for the trip.

His novels set during the period 6th to 12th centuries which feature the religious conflict to one extent or another are -

Druid Sacrifice (first half 6th century)
Columba (second half 6th century)
these deal with Paganism v Christianity.

Kenneth (first half 9th century)
High Kings and Vikings (late 10th/early11th centuries)
MacBeth the King (mid 11th century)
Margaret the Queen (late 11th century)
David the Prince (first half 12th century)
these feature to some extent Romish v Columban Christianity.

They seem to know everything about Anne Mark because it's a book they read in school. 33,000 Japanese tourists come over on average each year just to see her house on Prince Edward Island. A TV series and one or two movies and a musical have been made about Anne.
Here's Anne is telling my Granddaughter not to speak to Gilbert Blythe because he calls her carrot top and her friend with black hair, crow.

And talking of York, I'm off there next Tuesday, just for one night. I haven't been for years now, so we'll see what changes there are. On the way I'm going to see a place I've promised myself for years I'm going to visit but never quite made it and that's the National Railway Museum.... won't the missus be thrilled!

The picture of your granddaughter and Anne is precious, PBA.  It shows the contrast of times.  Anne with her stockings and long dress, boots and hat contrasts beautifully with your granddaughter's casual style with her celll phone close by!  Still, by their smiles, it would seem that they have much in common.

Okay.  Here it is.  In the book I am reading about the 7th century Irish lawyer, Sister Fidelma, her companion traveller is  "handsome Saxon brother Eadulf".  I get a pretty clear picture of our pretty Irish gal, but can anyone tell me what a handsome Saxon would look like?  We are tallking about 1,352 years ago.  I don't even understand where the Saxons were then.

I am also entering the time when some abbots are embracing, and enforcing, the celibacy rules in their abbeys; in other words, the Romish rule.  The Yellow Plague has swept the country and some of the once-converted Christians are now feeling that the plague has come over them because the old gods are angry at their conversion.  The Christians, of course, maintain that the plague is God's punishment for them not converting.

Saxon was a general term given to the Germanic invaders who settled in much of England following the departure of the Romans. They never colonized Scotland, Wales or Ireland though, but they would have gone to those parts on trading missions or warlike raids etc. In time they became known as Anglo-Saxons. They supposedly came rom Saxony, which back then was a much larger state than the east German Kingdom it became in more recent times.

I should imagine they looked like modern man but smaller and hairier. An accepted myth is that they were all blond due to the story that Pope Gergory I in the 590s saw some captured English slaves and upon being told they were Angles remarked that they looked like angels.
