I think one of the biggest problems faced by the Indian troops was the extreme winters which they weren't a custom to on the western front.

And yet the French used Senegalese, Algerians, Indo-Chinese etc on the Western Front throughout the war, they must have been horrified when winter arrived. The Dutch actually gave permission for the unarmed Germans to return home via Limburg province (that "leg" of The Netherlands that extends south between Germany and Belgium) so they could put down the Revolution that threatened to infect all of Europe. However many in The Netherlands objected to the "invasion" and there was unrest in several cities. It didn't help that the Kaiser had been granted asylum by the Dutch government just days earlier. There is evidence that Belgian agents were stirring up trouble in the area to gain control of Limburg with a renegotiation of the 1839 Treaty in which Belgium lost the eastern half of the province to The Netherlands.

The original idea was that they'd be handed over to the victorious Allies, but nobody wanted them so the vast majority were scuttled in 1919. A few were kept as museum objects.

I've an extra event for 19 November 1918. It was a huge disaster but one which is all but forgotten coming soon soon after the Armistice, any other time and it would still be talked about today. There's almost nothing on it on the internet even. 19 November 1918. A German ammunition train returning to Germany explodes at the Belgian-Dutch border town of Hamont. The town is practically destroyed along with a troop train also in the station. 1007 killed - yet I knew nothing about this until a few weeks ago.

Why would they be taking ammunition back to Germany in the first place is my question. If they had turned over all their equipment as part of the agreement then what would they want the ammunition for in the first place if they didn't have the guns to fire it from.

A good question. Many artillery pieces were handed over plus machine guns etc, but not all. I assume the Allies didn't actually want to use the surrendered weapons, just prevent the Germans from using them.

Thursday 21 November 1918.

Surrender of the German High Seas Fleet. Under the terms of the Armistice 75 warships were to be surrendered to the Allies until final disposal could be arranged. It was decided that they would be interned at Scapa Flow the Royal Navy base in the Orkney Islands off Scotland's north coast. Under the command of Rear Admiral Meurer the fleet sailed under escort to the Firth of Forth on 21 November where they were to lie at anchor for several days before sailing to their final destination. The fleet was made up of 11 battleships, five battlecruisers, eight cruisers and 50 destroyers (one destroyer, the V30, struck a mine en route and sank).

The first Allied troops enter Constantinople, the French.

Back in 1971, me and the lads were down in Cornwall on our bikes and I think I've told you in the past, we separated our cooperative money into three piles, petrol, booze and what was left went on food. Cornwall was almost empty in those days and we decided to pick lots to send one of us out on a Mackerel fishing trip, which was a cheap way of feeding us for two days. We OD'd on Mackerel. Anyway, I was the winner and off I went on this small fishing boat. I can't remember how it came about but somebody got the old Captain in conversation and off he went telling us of his service in the Royal Navy in WW1. All I can remember was him talking about how the Royal navy was lined up on both sides as the German fleet sailed between them, heading for Scapa Flow. All their canon was loaded and ready to fire, if the Krauts got funny but he told us how the old salt next to him was crying his eyes out with pride at the sight.

Yes, it was only am Armistice so in theory the Germans could have started firing, but of course they were never going to. There were ships from other Allied navies there too to watch the Germans sail into captivity. By December the ships were at Scapa Flow and the submarines at Harwich.

Germany had to surrender all her submarines but was permitted to retain six pre-Dreadnought battleships and six cruisers. All her destroyers were surrendered but she was allowed to build 12 new ones. She was prohibited from building any ships above 12,000 tons. There were to be no airships or naval aircraft. The idea was to prevent Germany from becoming a threat ever again, but to keep its navy strong enough to act as a counter-balance to Soviet Russia.

A short-lived Socialist government established in Munich after the King fled just before the Armistice. It's leader was Kurt Eisner. He aimed to create an independent Bavaria, but after a few months of near independence while the central government in Berlin wrestled with a Socialist uprising Bavaria eventually joined the Weimar Republic. Eisner didn't last long he was assassinated in February 1919 on his way to hand in his resignation.
