Hungarian - Roumanian War - With about a quarter of Hungarian territory occupied by Roumanian troops the Hungarians sign an armistice.

7 May 1919.

The German delegation is presented with the first draft of the peace treaty and is given 15 days to consider and respond.

11 May 1919.

Yet another short-lived government is established in eastern Europe out of the chaos of the Frist World War. The Bessarabian Soviet Socialist Republic is proclaimed in Tiraspol, despite it not being part of Bessarabia. In reality it was a political move by the Reds, who had recently taken over that area of Ukraine, to create an administration that would "invite" Russian troops in to absorb Ukraine into Russia itself. 

13 May 1919.

Greek troops land at Smyrna in Turkey, supposedly to protect the Christian population, but in reality the Greeks anticipate that Smyrna will be awarded to them in the forthcoming peace treaty.

In Estonia the last Russian troops are pushed back across the border at Narva causing panic in Petrograd as the Reds fear an attack on the city by Estonian forces backed by British naval units.

21 May 1919.

The Royal Navy Caspian Flotilla of five converted merchant vessels and a seaplane carrier defeats a Bolshevik flotilla of four ships and two submarines off Alexandrovsky Fort in the Caspian Sea. Every Russian vessel was either damaged or sunk.  

22 May 1919.

The Bolshevik government in Latvia is expelled from the capital Riga by German and pro-White forces.

25 May 1919.

Estonian and White forces advancing on Petrograd seize Pskov, the town made famous two years earlier as the scene of Tsar Nicholas' abdication.

27 May 1919.

A failed Bolshevik uprising in Tighina, Roumania is quickly suppressed by Roumanian and French troops, 150 Bolsheviks subsequently executed.

28 May 1919.

As the Greeks move inland from Izmir (see 13 May) they clash for the first time with the Turkish Army at Odemis 70 miles to the southeast.
