Re:World War I : March 1919 Date Posted:21/03/2019 06:41:55Copy HTML 21 March 1919. In scenes that would be farcical if they weren't so serious the Hungarian President Karolyi appoints a new government to succeed the one that resigned the day before. He names the leader of the Social Democratic Party Sandor Garbai as Prime Minister. However, unknown to Karolyi, Garbai has merged his party with the Communist Party and immediately upon his appointment he proclaims the Hungarian Soviet Republic and forces Karolyi's resignation. Re:World War I : March 1919 Date Posted:23/03/2019 01:40:17Copy HTML Paris, April 2, 1919
Letter from an American doughboy to his mother in Albion N.Y.
This kid was anxious to get home but transport was slow & the wait tedious.
He writes the French are much dissatisfied with the progress of the Peace Conference. I am not perturbed by the attitude of the newspapers, as they are seeking trouble, but I do believe that the French in general would have been much better pleased to have finished the war with a severe beating for the Hun rather than an armistice. We have passed five months without the terms of peace being imposed on the conquered & the slow demobilization of the Hun's armed forces have increased his arrogance.
How astute for a soldier who was just a "grunt."

Re:World War I : March 1919 Date Posted:23/03/2019 07:09:50Copy HTML The French were certainly responsible for the harsh peace terms, they wanted to render Germany pretty well defenceless. In fact they pushed for even harsher terms that the other Allies rejected. They even wanted to establish an "independent" Rhineland Republic as a French-dominated buffer state against Germany.
