Following WW2 the government shipped out huge amounts of munitions and dumped them into the sea off Stranraer in the south west of Scotland. Amongst this lot there is something that ignites when exposed to air. They always say the sea gives up its dead and it's the case with this stuff. When I used to be there on a regular basis I would pass the rocky inlet bay where the ferries came in and you would see heaps of smoking stuff that had been washed inshore and combusted as the tide went out.

For yesterday's entry I mentioned the Freikorps. They were bodies of soldiers, mostly officers and NCOs, fresh from the Front who organized themselves into informal units with the aim of halting the spread of Bolshevism that had become a genuine threat in the dying days of the war. This irregular militia was to feature strongly in German politics in the decade after the war with the approval, more or less, of the regular Army and many politicians.

Not just the British. The Allied Army of Intervention to combat the Bolsheviks involved several countries with GB, Japan and the USA sending the most men and equipment. The British were the most widely spread seeing action in the Arctic, the far east and the Caspian Sea. The US sent around 13,000 of which about 430 died.

The British Caspian Sea Flotilla comprised ten Russian coastal steamers captured and converted by the British and 12 motor boats brought in by rail from Batumi on the Black Sea.

Ultimately the effort proved unsuccessful and most countries withdrew in 1920, although the Japanese stayed in Vladivostok until 1922.

So as early as 1918 there was a movement in Germany to establish a communist style government. Add the chaos & confusion of defeat, the harshness of the Versailles Treaty, the upcoming Weimar republic & the German personality of requiring strong leadership & order = the rise of the Nazi Party & Hitler within a decade. Reflect back to a Brit politician (forgot who) who said he feared a weak Germany than strong one & hindsight is 20/20.

I never fully understood until recently how close Germany came to turning to Communism in the winter 1918/19. The Freikorps (see post #7) played a major role in the suppression of the Communist uprisings.

It was supposedly the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George who said he feared a weak Germany almost as much as he did a stong one.

WWI is the war that did not end. The winning colonial powers carved up the spoils for their own self-interest. The Japs & Chinks stole Korea, the French claimed southeast Asia, the Brits, French, Dutch carved up Africa, the Brits, French, Russians & others carved up the Arabian Peninsula. European colonization led to the deaths of millions, & sucked the U.S. into cleaning up messes in Iraq & Afghanistan to this day. So not only is WWI the war that never really ended, it has also caused most or all of the next wars, conflicts, police actions in the world. And Europeans are the one's to blame with their intrigue of intertwined & convoluted conflicts, emperors, colonizations, & various political-isms inflicted on the rest of us.

The Japanese had already taken over Korea in 1910; the colonial land grab was over by 1914, all that was left was the former German colonial empire to distribute among the victorious powers, it was divided up between GB, France, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The Ottoman outposts went to GB and France to be guided towards independence.

True though that the peace settlements in 1919 settled nothing and stored up trouble for the future. It must also be remembered that the USA was also a signatory to the peace treaty with Germany, it's not all our fault.

The historical greed is all your fault, Mark. Because of the Great War & the carving up of the world by the European powers we got: The Korean War The Vietnam War The African mess The Arabian Peninsula mess All the global effects of WWI. Of course Wilson wanted to straighten it out with the League of Nations but our Congress was sick & tired of bailing out the Europeans so it failed. Now we have the U.N. with us doing all the heavy lifting & add NATO as well. Trump sees it clearly & so does his base. Enough is enough.
