In the book "The German Catastrophe", the author theorizes that since Germany was not united until after most other European countries (Bismarck) & the Germans were jealous of other's empires. That plus the Prussian warlike nature & the propensity of Germans to like order from the top led to involvement in both World Wars. The author also claims that Germany did not have the manpower nor raw materials to be successful but marvels at what they accomplished with what they had.

The fact that they were so successful in 1914 and even more so 1939-41 coupled with the sheer numbers and effort it took to defeat them after years of trying is testimony to the resilience of the German fighting machine in both World Wars.

Tuesday 27 August 1918.

In desperation Russia signs a supplement to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (see 3 March). Russia to pay Germany £300 million in war reparations, Germany to have use of what remains of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, Russia to export one third of her oil to Germany from Baku once the Turks have taken the city, the Baltic States to be recognized as German spheres of influence. In return Germany guarantees that Finland will not attack Russia.

Seems the Germans still trying to dictate demands even this late in the War. I would have told them the cheque is in the mail and left it at that.

The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was bad enough for Russia, but to agree to this amendment was incredible. It justs goes to show how desperate Lenin had become to avoid a resumption of the war with Germany, and yet he must have known that Germany was on the retreat in the West and that Germany was in no way ready or able to strike in the East.

The only explanation that makes ny sense is that Lenin fully expected a rapid German collapse and with it an opportunity to "export" Bolshevism into the ruins of the German Empire if he could buy some time. History will show that he was very nearly right in that assumption.

I mentioned the Blackburn Kangaroo above, it must be one of the ugliest aeroplanes ever constructed, only 20 were ever built.
