Monday 15 July 1918.
2nd Battle of the Marne. A German offensive, known to the attackers as Operation Friedensturm, was directed against the French on a 50 mile front east and west of Reims. After the usual early morning artillery bombardment the German infantry attacked. However the French, forewarned of the attack, had prepared a defensive strategy, allow the Germans to overwhelm the first line of defence before cutting them down at a strongly held second line. This worked perfectly east of Reims with the Germans failing to get near the French second line. But to the west they penetrate up to three miles on a 20 mile front, US troops are brought up to strengthen the line.

Tuesday 16 July 1918.
2nd Battle of the Marne. East of Reims the French and Americans go on the attack pushing the Germans back; to the west the Germans continue to advance. RAF bombers cause devastation to the German rear supply lines and depots.

2nd Battle of the Marne. The German advance west of Reims stalls and the Allies counter-attack. The British join the line.
The Cunard liner RMS Carpathia, the ship that rescued the Titanic survivors in 1912, is sunk by torpedoes from the U55 off the southern coast of Ireland en route from Liverpool to Boston. Of the 223 on board only five crewmen are killed.
