800 years ago today, on 14 May 1219, Sir William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke died, regarded as England's, if not Europe's, most chivalric knight.

He died at his manor of Caversham aged 72/73 having served four Kings and in his final years led the resistance in the name of the boy King Henry III against the French Prince Louis who had arrived in England at the request of some rebel Lords in 1216.

He was buried in the Templars Church, London.

This thread is dedicated to Shula who I know has an interest in the Marshal.

England's greatest Knight? Pembroke is in Wales. Why Pembroke?

He married Isabel, Countess of Pembroke in 1189 and under the practice of the time adopted her title. In 1199 he was created Earl of Pembroke in his own right.

He had estates in England, Wales and Ireland and founded a number of religious houses in those three countries.

King Stephen held little William hostage in 1152.  William was only 6.  When William's father was told that his son would hang if he didn't keep his agreement to surrender his castle, this was his response:  "I still have the hammer and the anvil with which to forge still more and better sons!"

Despite having five sons, all of whom reached adulthood and married, the Earldom of Pembroke died out within 30 years of William's death. According to legend the Irish Bishop of Ferns cursed the Marshal for appropriating Church land. After his death in 1219 each of his sons inherited the title in turn but all died childless and by 1245 the line had died out.

If memory serves, he had daughters too but left them nothing.  It sounds like a curse to me.  On the other hand, his candle was so bright that it stands unmatched.

I did not know that.  There must be to this day descendants of William's running amok in England then!

When you really think about it Shula there are probably descendants of William's to this day also running amok in the States. Probably in the Virginia's for sure. lol

Have you taken the DNA test yet from Ancestry.com. You may find that you come from Royalty way back and are entitled to property or at least a Castle in the old country. Doesn't hurt to dream, does it and you just never know until you take the swab test.

I was thinking of taking it but then I thought to myself I don't need a wack of kids showing up at my front door calling me Daddy at my age.

My sister had a DNA kit for her birthday, her results are obviously be the same as they would for me. Rather disappointingly we turned out to be 95% British Isles ancestry with only a tiny amount indicating ancestry from wider Europe, and that several hundred years ago. I was hoping for something a little more cosmopolitan.

The results are very generalized, they won't give you any specific ancestors just vague regional origins. It would be more useful for you over there, yours will all show strong connections to Europe.

I know I've got some Paddy in me as one of my distant relatives came over in the 1780's and went to Newcastle to be a miner. I don't talk about him. Apart from him, I've gone back on my grandmother's side to the 1500's and no sign of dilution there and I've gone down the other routes back to the 1700's and no dilution there either. So I think I'm pretty well bred, which is why I think Shule's wants children from me.

Rather disappointingly we turned out to be 95% British Isles ancestry with only a tiny amount indicating ancestry from wider Europe, and that several hundred years ago. That means that you and your sister could also have Scottish blood running through your veins then like I told you, right. Don't worry about that other 5% being European because the test results could have come placing you ancestors from Africa which would be harder to explain. About the matches with other people. You won't get that until someone else takes the test and is carrying the same DNA line as you and your sister are. That's how it's being picked up at Ancestry.com because you DNA matches with someone else's. The more people taking the test, the more chances of a hit.

I don't know the greatest Knight but the greatest day was Robin Day, who a political correspondent, TV interviewer, reporter and journalist. He ruled the political programme roost back in the 60's and 70's. One of the interviews I remember the most was when he hijacked the Japanese foreign minister on TV. Back in those days the Japs were like the Chinese now and copied everything. The Japanese minister was sat there when suddenly Robin stuck a product under his nose, which was a Japanese copy of a famous British product and confronted him with it. The Jap was taken aback and said his action was treachery. Treachery is it! replied Robin, well Pearl Harbour to you!! They don't make'em like that anymore and in our antiseptic, are you offended world, we'll not see his likes again.
