The forgotten man of the Lincoln assassination is the eccentric soldier who shot John Wilkes Booth. Born Thomas Corbett in England, he immigrated to Boston, where he became a reborn Christian. He adopted the city's name as his own in honor of his conversion. The now Boston Corbett had a religious zeal which knew no bounds. Fearing temptation by prostitutes he used a pair of scissors to castrate himself. Only an Englishman would do that.

During the Civil War Corbett became a cavalry sergeant & his unit took part in the search for Booth. On May 15, 1865 they surrounded the barn where Booth was hiding, & set it on fire. Corbett spotted Booth thru a crack in the barn & fired a shot which mortally wounded him. Corbett was declared insane in 1887 & sent to an asylum. The following year he escaped & was never heard from again.

Corbett was a hatter, & the mercury used to cure beaver pelts may have contributed to his madness, along with being an Englishman of course.

Yes the mercury was known for turnng hatters mad and that's where the term mad hatter comes from. Was he a Catholic Englishman then Tommy?

I watched a TV programme a few weeks ago in which it was suggested, quite convincibly, that the man shot dead in the barn wasn't Booth, apparently the corpse bore no physical resemblance to Booth and the soldiers present who knew it wasn't him were sworn to secrecy under threat of military punishment. Same with the doctor who certified death, he initially said the dead man wasn't Booth until pressurized into saying it was.

Do I spot a wind-up here? Tom, Englishmen don't castrate themselves as we had the world to colonise and populate and we made a excellent job of it, humping everything in sight. Now that takes balls.

Corbett was a hatter, & the mercury used to cure beaver pelts may have contributed to his madness, Hence the term, mad as a hatter.

Booth being an actor by trade may have disguised himself? Regardless, I have never heard that claim before. There was a substantial reward for Booth & Corbett received $1653.84 for his share, the same as every other member of his unit got. He was called "Lincoln's Avenger" after that.

I also watched that program where they mentioned it may not have been Booth shot, but to me the evidence the program offered didn't persuade me that it wasn't him.

No it isn't, but then their American children took it to a whole new level and that also isn't a myth as you can see.

What they are saying got Lincoln shot in the first place wasn't that he was just for emancipation but he was wanting blacks to be able to serve in the military and those blacks could have the right to vote.  Too much change to fast for the south to except. I always have said here on the site, Americans don't like change and to change anything you can only do a bit of it at a time. You have to coax them into change by making them think the chance will be to their advantage somehow.

It’s not change itself Pete, it’s the speed of it. Slow change is progress, fast change is revolution and that’s a dangerous concept with untold circumstances and history tells you it’s hardly ever for the best.

Lincoln never started out as the Great Emancipator, in fact he never felt the Negro was equal to the Whites in any manner. He was in favor of shipping any Negro willing, back to Africa. It wasn't until after the Civil War progressed with such hideous casualties that he changed his views, & that was more for expediency than out of good will for the darkies. It was after Lincoln announced the right to vote plans for the former slaves that Booth made his fateful decision.

So what's made you come over comical all of a sudden. It wasn't long ago you sided with Donald and thought the election was full of cheating. Even most Republican have now come to grips with that being part of the big 4 year lie.

I heard this on the news the other night but will have to get our Topsie to confirm it.

Virginia is thinking of removing the death penalty from their books.

Even Tennessee has finally stopped hanging Elephants.

Mary (c. 1894–September 13, 1916), also known as "Murderous Mary", was a five-ton Asian elephant who performed in the Sparks World Famous Shows circus. After killing a keeper on his second day at work, in Kingsport, Tennessee in 1916, she was hanged in nearby Erwin. The bad part was, it wasn't even given a trial.
