What they are saying got Lincoln shot in the first place wasn't that he was just for emancipation but he was wanting blacks to be able to serve in the military and those blacks could have the right to vote.  Too much change to fast for the south to except. I always have said here on the site, Americans don't like change and to change anything you can only do a bit of it at a time. You have to coax them into change by making them think the chance will be to their advantage somehow.

 ‍Lincoln never started out as the Great Emancipator, in fact he never felt the Negro was equal to the Whites in any manner. He was in favor of shipping any Negro willing, back to Africa. It wasn't until after the Civil War progressed with such hideous casualties that he changed his views, & that was more for expediency than out of good will for the darkies. It was after Lincoln announced the right to vote plans for the former slaves that Booth made his fateful decision.
