1 April 1922 - Karl, Emperor of Austria-Hungary 1916-18, died.

He succeeded to the Throne at the height of the war. Within months he put out secret peace feelers, but his country was too closely bound to Germany for a separate peace to be negotiated.

He renounced the government at the end of the war, but did not abdicate. At first he and his family lived quietly in Austria before seeking exile in Switzerland in March 1919.

Twice in 1921 he crossed the border into Hungary in the hope that he could be restored there. On the second occasion he even announced a Provisional Government and Cabiinet. But it all came to nothing. Switzerland refused to allow him to return, so the Royal Navy carried him and his wife into exile on the Portuguese island of Madeira in November 1921 where their children joined them in February 1922. Within weeks he was dead, he contracted pneumonia and died on 2 April aged just 34.

Many cases of "insanity", not only among Royal families, would not be diagnosed as such today and would most likely be treatable/curable.

I'm chosing interesting stories, so tales of insanity and murder will often appear giving the impression that such goings on were more of a regular occurence than they actually were.

28 April 1192 - Conrad I, King of Jerusalem 1192, assassinated.

One of history's shortest reigning Monarchs. Son and heir to the Marquis of Montferrat Conrad arrived in the Holy Land in 1187 to join his father in the garrison port of Tyre. They successfully held it against attacks by the forces of Saladin who had already captured the city of Jerusalem.

In 1190 Conrad married Isabella, a rival claimant to Gui, King of Jerusalem, in Acre the new capital of the Christian Kingdom. Gui's loss of the city of Jerusalem in 1187 made him unpopular and in mid April 1192 the nobles voted to depose him and place Conrad, a proven and successful warrior, on the Throne. Conrad, who had returned to Tyre, heard of his election on 20 April. His coronation and that of his wife, who was to reign alongside him, was to take place at Acre early in May.

However on 28 April King Conrad was walking in the streets of Tyre when he was stabbed to death by two men on the orders of the leader of the Islamic sect the Assassins, Rashid ad-Din Sinan. He had reigned for just 12 days.

His widow Isabella was now the undisputed Queen of Jerusalem and just 12 days later married Henry, Count of Champagne who was hailed as joint-ruler with her.

I wonder what his true nature was.  A reading of him on the internet says some say he was a good man and some say he was cruel to Isabella.  I prefer this description:

Conrad was vigorous in arms, extremely clever both in natural mental ability and by learning, amiable in character and deed, endowed with all the human virtues, supreme in every council, the fair hope of his own side and a blazing lightning-bolt to the foe, capable of pretence and dissimulation in politics, educated in every language, in respect of which he was regarded by the less articulate to be extremely fluent. In one thing alone was he regarded as blameworthy: that he had seduced another's wife away from her living husband, and made her separate from him, and married her himself.[1]

(The last sentence refers to his third marriage to Isabella of Jerusalem in 1190, for which see below.)

He would have been a successful King I think, just the kind of ruler the embattled Crusader States needed at that time. He could have united the three Christian States at a time when disunity and internal quarrels were as greater threat as Saladin's armies. It's likely his marriage to Isabella was unlawful as one or both of his former wives were still alive in Europe, but what goes on in Acre stays in Acre.

29 April 1901 - Hirohito, Emperor of Japan 1926-89, born.

Regent for his father Emperor Yoshihito from 1921. The first 15 years of his reign were marked by military aggression and expansion, but how much was due to Hirohito himself is debatable. Defeat in 1945 resulted in him publicly renouncing his semi-divine status and ruling as a Constitutional Monarch thereafter.

His son who succeeded him in 1989, Akihito will abdicate tomorrow after 30 years on the Throne,

I remember Hirohito visiting Britain in 71, a mere 26 years after the end of WW2. Many thousands of Brits were still alive who suffered appalling torture and deprivation under the barbaric scum that was the Japanese empire, not to mention the tens of thousands killed by a nation run by that brainless tit. Naturally our Lizzie had to accommodate the monkey in her role as head of state but she must have been gagging in his presence. They took a coach ride down the Mall from Buckingham Palace and hundreds stood in silence as they passed. You couldn't send a more emphatic message to him, as normally there would be hundreds of flags waving and crowds cheering when Lizzie passed, but it was total silence. They wanted to boo and hiss but didn't out of respect for the Queen.

I collect items with the logo "Made in Occupied Japan".  The operative word being "occupied".  The delicately painted little cups and figurines remind me that we once owned their asses.

I was totally against America dropping two atom bombs on Japan.

They should have dropped 4 or 5 of them instead. The Japanese were visiting Ottawa yesterday. They were here wanting to talk about the up coming G-7 or G-20 meeting. That or they want to open another car plant in Canada because of Trump and his tariffs on them.

30 April 1662 - Mary II, Queen of England and Scotland 1689-94, born.

Eldest survivng child of James, Duke of York by his first wife. Mary was raised a Protestant, even though her father converted to Catholicism when she was still a child.  In 1677 she married her cousin William, Prince of Orange ruler of The Netherlands. Her father succeeded to the Throne in 1685 and she became heir, But in 1688 King James' second wife gave birth to a son who was baptized a Catholic.

The Protestant heirachy began a campaign to discredit the birth by claiming that the boy had been born dead and a peasant child had been smuggled into the Royal bed in a warming pan. Despite the ludicrous nature of the claim it was widely believed by those who wanted an end to the Catholic King James. In June several Protestant bishops invited William (who had a claim to the Throne himself after his wife's family) to invade and seize the Throne. In this Mary was fully compliant, endorsing entirely the "warming plan plot" and urging her husband to action. He in turn told the English Lords and Churchmen that he would only accept if Mary would reign alongside him as joint-Monarch.

To cut a long story short, the Glorious Revolution of the winter 1688/89 was a remarkable and bloodless success for William and Mary who were proclaimed King and Queen in February. She however was Queen in name only, she passed all political power to her husband. She died of smallpox five years later in 1694 aged 32.

It was the only ocassion in British history that two Monarchs have reigned equally together.

Yesterday I saidThat or they want to open another car plant in Canada because of Trump and his tariffs on them. Well they just don't want to start a new car plant in Canada but also want to add more shifts to the exsisting plants to make Suv's and other models. The Japanese delegates even went so far as thanking Canada for taking in so many Japanese after the second war. I would have preferred them apologizing for their prison of war camps first, but that will never happen. Like Germany, that has already removed from their history books.

We honored William and Mary over here in the Colonies with a law school named after them founded in 1779.  It is ranked one of the best in the country and is the oldest law school in the U.S.  It is located in historic Williamsburg, VA.

The scary part  Shula is when they first started testing the bomb they didn't know if the chain reaction caused by spliting the atom would keep spliting atoms and end up destroying the world.

It was like I was being held captive in one of those Virginia cave basements. Even the whole top of my site page is different now.

The video which I think is the only one in colour sure makes it sound scary not really knowing what would happen when the second bomb was tested.
