We have wondered where our Snowbird went off to.  I believe this settles the matter.  R.I.P. Snowbird.

Gerard "Jerry" O'Meara

Gerard "Jerry" O'Meara, 83, of River Edge, NJ, passed away in his sleep on Sunday, Oct. 8, after a long illness. In life, his family joked that Jerry had two speeds: "On" and "Sleep." When "On," Jerry was well-known for his larger-than-life personality, sense of fun and mischief, wicked sense of humor, love of banter, family gatherings, and political debate.

Most often, Jerry was found in his wood shop, working on a building project while listening to Irish music, or with his wife of 56 years, Noranne (nee Ferrari) -- Jerry and Noranne were nearly inseparable. His three children -- Kristin, Stephen and David O'Meara -- inherited his sense of humor, curly hair, love of gardening and fixing up old things, as well as kids, dogs, and corned beef. They, along with his daughter-in-law Patricia, will especially miss his pop-up Irish brogue, which he used mainly on holidays.

Children loved Jerry, and his 11 nieces and nephews considered him to be a portable jungle gym. He harbored a deep, unabashed, and abiding adoration for his three grandchildren, Sophia O'Meara Shalit, Gillan O'Meara and Aidan O'Meara.

Jerry was a master of the barbecue, a die-hard fan of the Yankees and Giants and a meticulous keeper of his always-green lawn and garden. Known as the neighborhood's go-to guy for tips on how to repair or replace almost anything, Jerry was a frequent flyer at Home Depot and he was always at the ready to loan tools and his self-taught expertise to his neighbors. He especially loved the winter, because it gave him the opportunity to use his snowblower to clear the paths and driveways of his neighbors on Voorhis Avenue.

Jerry was raised on 164th Street in Washington Heights by his parents, Agnes (nee Hyland) and Frank O'Meara. He is survived by his brother Donald. He was predeceased by his sisters Margaret O'Rorke and Gloria O'Meara.

Jerry was a star athlete at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. After a stint in the U.S. Army and work as an inspector with the New York Central Railroad he became a salesman by trade. Jerry retired from a commercial printing firm in New York City after more than 30 years in the industry. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and also served as a volunteer coach of baseball, basketball and football teams in River Edge.

While he may now be in "Sleep" mode, Jerry will never be far from his family's thoughts.

A Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, 10:30 AM, St. Peter the Apostle Church, River Edge. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. Visitation takes place on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017 beginning at 2 PM and concluding at 6 PM at the Beaugard-McKnight Funeral Home, River Edge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry's Memory to the John Theurer Cancer Center.

We feared as much when he disappeared a few years ago. He was a great bloke and a valued member, who lived a full life it seems.

We have missed Jerry for awhile now and were all hesitant to ask about his health. We use to e-mail each other on snow days and brag about how good are snowblowers were doing. We both shared the same make, model and size and both ended up doing most of the neighbourhood when ever it snowed. The sad part is we both enjoyed doing it, not so much that we liked our nighbours but did enjoy getting out and talking to them.

Funny you mention your will, Pete. I told my kids when I go to the great beyond I intend to cash out even. Nothing for them in my will. When asked why are you doing that dad? I replied, "Cause I want you to miss me." RIP Snowbird.

I did not know him. I am very sorry to read this. This group has been together for a number of year and started out with MSN first if I'm correct and then to Aimoo on 2008-09. Jerry was our oldest member but we have lost younger ones due to health complications through the years. As you have probably noticed by now we don't just discuss history on this site but also air our dirty laundry and throw rocks at each other. They are only soft rocks though and and everyone here has broad enough shoulders that they just bounce off. We may sound serious at times with are finger poking of each other but really we're not. Believe it or not ,we also have been known to share a laugh, usually at someone elses expense of course.

Just so that you know, I do not waste my time arguing, airing dirty laundry, or throwing stones.

At the former MSN Groups, I was a member of some history groups, that either moved or died.

When MSN Groups died, some people did not move with their groups.

A little arguing is good, there's no fun if we all agree. PBA - I joined the MSN group in 2003; you, Tommy, Shula were already members along with several who've since disappeared or passed on. Even now you link Shula with squirrels and cars, that's something that dates back before I joined and is a mystery to me even after 15 years.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to refresh some old minds and inlighten others Mark. The story goes and you must all remember, that it is only a story taken from rumours from her neighbours, that our Littlemisssquirelhunter hated the poor little creatures that grace her yard each day. Those being those cuddley little fluffy tailed balls of fur we all know, love, befriend and feed as common black and grey squirrels. Shula was accused after catching them of strapping then to the hood of her car and then driving her car around town as fast as she could just to watch the poor dears fur blow in the strong winds and watch their terrified with fear looks she was creating on their wee faces. Now, how many hundreds of squirrels she did this to is up for grabs but the very though that she was doing it made all of us members uneasy. One neigbour went so far which was also confirmed by another neighbour that she liked best to tie them to her windshield wipers and then turn the wipers on high speed which would make there wee arms and hands appear to be conducting an orchestra. All this carrying on she use to do came to an abrupt end when her family Doctor got her to stop eating the mushrooms she was growing in her backyard, so we all agreed behind her back to not bring up the subject again.

Snowbird was indeed a valued member.  Reading the obituary I knew I had the right "Jerry" because he presented the same picture to us through the written word.  We've missed him for some time but at least now we have closure.

Well that's cleared that up after 15 years then......I think.   Yes and Shula seems to be much better since she joined that 12 step program. I think she only has one or two steps left to conquer. PS, and the squirrels are much happier too. Poor dears.
