Can still remember during the Nijmegen March our group of 30 catching up and passing Haig. Just as we were behind him we all shouldered arms to prepare to give him a salute. We all said together good morning General, at that he turned fast and looked like a deer caught in the headlights. With this, we saluted him and he realized who we were and weren't there to kill him. One of those guys yells out where's all your troops Sir. He said back there somewhere. I was waiting for one of our smart asses to say ya we know, we passed them all. Now that I think about it he shouldn't have been there by himself being the Supreme Allied Commander Europe at the time.

I wasn't too keen on him Tommy during the Falklands affair.

I am not too keen on too many generals anyway, Pete. Especially Haig after his "I'm in charge here" statement after Reagan got shot. We have a retired Brig here in my little town who is active in all the local service clubs. Really full of himself as most of em are.

3 April 1203 - Arthur, Duke of Brittany 1187-1203, murdered (likely date).

Arthur was the posthumous son of Geoffrey, Duke of Brittany the second son of Henry II, King of England. Geoffrey died in 1186 leaving a pregnant widow, the reigning Duchess Constance. She gave birth to Arthur in March 1187 whereupon he was proclaimed Duke.

With the accession of Richard I as King of England in 1189 Arthur became his heir and remained so until Richard's death in 1199, but on his deathbed the King named his brother John as heir fearing that the 12 year old Arthur was too young and, more importantly, too much influenced by the King of France to wear the English Crown.

War broke out immediately between England and France, King Philippe invaded the English possessions in France of Anjou and Maine in Arthur's name. It ended badly for Arthur, he was captured in 1202 and imprisoned in the castle at Rouen. And it was from here that he disappeared in April 1203.

He was almost certainly murdered on King John's orders and rumours circulated that the King had personally killed the 16 year old boy and thrown his body into the river Seine. No body was ever found, although again there were stories that it was discovered by fishermen and secretly buried in the Abbey of Bec near Rouen.

Most colonials are confused about the role of royalty & the roles they played in history. After reading & learning from some of these posts I am REALLY confused. Never heard of the term posthumous son, but after pondering for a while.........I get it now.

Simple mathematics, Duke Geoffrey died in August 1186, his son Arthur was born seven months later in March 1187.

Art, you're closer than you realize about putting it into a play; Shakespeare did just that. King John written about 1595 but not published until 1623 seven years after his death depicts the demise of the young Arthur. Shakespeare does not put the blame on King John though.

Arthur had an elder sister Eleanor who, after Arthur's murder, was held captive by King John as she was a threat to his Crown. She was 19 years old and remained a prisoner of the State for the rest of her life. She was held in comfortable confinement in a variety of castles across England until her death in 1241 aged 57.

Yes, she was kept in some old drafty castles. They didn't even have glass windows to stop the rain and cold winter winds from blowing in. It took a whole forest of hard wood in those places just trying to take the chill off each year. They tried to cover the walls with tapestries just to keep the wind from blowing through them. People are going nuts right now being locked up for two weeks so you can imagine what it would be like spending your whole live in those conditions. Didn't even have cable TV to watch.

Her enforced confinement, I call it that rather than imprisonment, was genuinely comfortable even by modern standards. She was watched and prevented from mixing ouside her circle (the fear was she would get married and produce more rivals to the Throne) but otherwise her life was OK, she was allowed out to go riding for instance and was regularly sent gifts from King John and his successor Henry III.

4 April 1841 - William Harrison, President of the USA 1841, died.

America's shortest serving President, he died exactly one month after his inauguration.

A former soldier turned Whig politician his political career appeared to be over when he retired to his farm in Ohio in 1829, but was tempted out of retirement in 1836 when he came second to van Buren in the Presidential Election. Running again in 1840 he easily beat van Buren by 234 Electoral votes to 60. He was sworn in on 4 March 1841, at 68 he was the USA's oldest President and would remain so until Ronald Reagan in 1981.

He delivered his inaugural speech of nearly two hours without wearing either coat or hat on a cold wintry day and this is thought to be the cause of his death. He fell ill at the end of the month and died on 4 April. However recent investigations have suggested that he died as a result of an infected water supply at the White House.

Other than his short tenure and his age he is best remembered for his election slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler too", a reference to his military past and his running mate John Tyler.

Aha, yet another interesting conspiracy theory here. If my ever fading memory serves me, Ray fled to Canada & then to London where he was eventually captured. We were led to believe he was a small time crook who acted alone in the assassination. One obvious question is how did such a man have the funds for this world travel? He must have been a "patsy" controlled by some evil group. Remember "patsy" was the word Lee Harvey Osborne used to describe himself after his arrest for murdering JFK. Back to Ray, he went from Toronto to London. So I surmise that MI-6 was pulling the strings along with the Canadian Intelligence Agency. Wait a minute, Canada does not have an "Intelligence" agency. Never mind.

We did steal baseball off you in 92 and 93 and would have taken it in 94 if the league hadn't gone on strike. Same with the basket ball last year and would have done it again this year if the virus hadn't showed up. Not too many people know the real Fleming during the war. On the Dieppe raid he was waiting off shore for the 4 wheeled Enigma machine to be taken from the German Navy Headquarters there and when he got it was to make back to England as fast as possible and deliver it north east of London to Bletchley Park. He had a lot to do with the setting up and training done at Camp X. They was also a spy training school and many of the men and women that were dropped off in France by parachute were trained there. The Prime Minister of Canada at the time William Lyon Mackenzie didn't even know the place existed until after the war.

The King assassination produced a very surreal situation for me.  That weekend (the 5th of April) my then-husband, who was in army, and I went to New York with another couple (the guy was also in the army).  All seemed normal when we left on Friday evening but the riots were just breaking out.  When we came home we had to come through D.C. and it was like a war zone.  Military everywhere and total chaos.  We heard New York erupted just after we left there.  I still have the souvenirs I brought back from New York's Chinatown.  The restaurant we went to in the City must have been a really good one because the waiter was extremely rude.  I learned on good authority that in New York City, the more rude the waiter, the better the restaurant.

6 April 1199 - Richard I, King of England and Duke of Normandy 1189-99, died.

England's great warrior King who led the Third Crusade. However his state of almost constant warfare, either on Crusade or with the French, severely depleted the Treasury. His ransom of 150,000 marks demanded by the Holy Roman Emperor Henry after Richard was captured by him in 1193 on his way home from the Crusade was especially burdensome.

Richard in fact spent less than a year in England during his ten year reign, the rest was taken up with the Third Crusade 1189-94 and war in France 1194-99. It was during his war against King Philippe of France that he met his death. He was wounded in the shoulder by a crossbow bolt fired from the ramparts during the siege of Chalus Castle. The barbed head could not be removed, the wound became infected and he died aged 41. On his deathbed he bequeathed the Crown to his brother John overlooking his true heir his nephew Arthur (see 3 April).
