The mausoleum on the right is the burial place of Queen Victoria's mother Victoria, Duchess of Kent. It was built in 1861 so the capitol came first. However it was based on the design of the Howard Mausoleum at Castle Howard in Yorkshire which was constructed in the 1730s, so perhaps the Yanks copied the English design, wouldn't be the first time.

If you’ve never been to Castle Howard Mark, go now, it’s the most spectacular building  next to Blenheim palace. Mind you, they both had the same architect. You could be there in probably less than two hours.

I just looked it up and to visit Howard Castle is 39 pds or $53.99 American or $66.91 CDN. For that price they better serve a hot meal? Way too much money to pay to visit a castle that really isn't a castle but only a large estate house.

Hmm.  $53.99 vs. $66.91.  Do you try to pass for an American when you travel?  They say Canadians speak English but that French accent is a dead giveaway.

No place is worth that price for an hour tour, not even Disneyland. Britains a few years ago would have gone mad if they had to pay a couple of shillings for a look at their heritage sites and now your throwing money around like dunken American sailors on a shore pass.

Now if these expensive places give Brits from all walks of life a much better deal and not the rich tourist price, then that would be different, but there not. Nothing worse that a rich well to do Brit, belittling the poor classes of their country with their wealth and then charging them to see it.

Hell no girl, we don't belittle ourselves. No one tries to pass as Americans when travelling out of Country including Americans. Why do you think you see so many of those little Canadian flag patches at alll your airports. Their not all Canadians you know. The biggest mistake Americans make when travelling abroad is comparing the place they are visiting with America and not being able to except there not the same and having to keep telling everyone.. poor dears

It’s around two years ago we visited it and I don’t remember paying that kind of money. Castle Howard is a private home and is truly one of the greatest masterpieces of British heritage to be found. Just how much do you think it costs to maintain a house like that? The bill for the gardens alone must be a million a year, then there is the relentless maintenance of the grounds, buildings, tapestries, paintings, thousands of precious books etc etc. It’s a 24 hour a day, 365 days a year job. It’s not an hour’s visit either, you can spend all day there and there are free buses to take you around the grounds and gardens. In this country you have a choice not to go. That last sentence of yours so typifies your kind, driven by jealously, envy and yearning desire to bring down anybody above your station. If the poor concern you so much, sell your house and give them the money. Oh I forgot, that’s your government’s job to give away money, your job is to advocate it and feel good about yourself.

Balderdash and poppycock.  That's not what all the little Canadian flags are about at all.  When Americans traveling abroad run afoul of local customs, they just pull out their little Canadian flag and the locals nod knowingly and say "that explains it -- they're Canadians".

Prices are posted on their home page.

If you can afford to buy it then you should be able to afford the maintence and up keep. Just like everyone else does who buys a house. If not get a job like everyone else that don't rely on people less fortunite than you to pay your bills.

If they took donations to a charity of their choice and then used that as a write off at tax time then that would be alright but they have instead used it for pure gain and supporting their own life style.

What do you mean, afford to buy it? They inherited it, their family have lived there for over 300 years. Those less fortunate people you are so commendably concerned about travel from every corner of the world to see it. Why don’t you write to them about your idea for tax and charity, I’m sure they would make a contribution to a mental charity of your choice. There’s that word choice again, why don’t you run a campaign to ban it? It’s so fascist.

That makes it worse because the present owners never paid a penny for it yet want to show the world how rich and lucky they are from something their ancestors did. Isn't that choice then.

I accept that such places are expensive to visit, especially if you add on over-priced souvenirs and food. But they're so fabulous and not the kind of place you see every day, it's worth it.

We went to Chatsworth a few years ago and got talking to a couple from Finland who were totally agog at such a fantastic place. And yes you can spend the entire day there.

Like all dizzy girls it seems you have a crush on Justin. So does Trump's daughter who meet him at the play "From Away" in New York without her husband and without Trudeau's wife. The first time she meet Justin she was like a giggly school girl and had to sit beside him. She got all red and flushed just talking to him. All on camera, I might add.
