Date Posted:02/05/2021 07:59:15Copy HTML Shula, in your studies into King Athelstan you would have seen mention of the battle of Brunanburh which cemented Athelstan's position as undisputed King of England. The year was 937 (precise date unknown) and more annoyingly the location of the battlefield is unknown too. Many places across England, mostly in the north west have been suggested, but recent archaelogical discoveries have come up with a "definitive" site - the Wirral peninsula, somewhere between the village of Raby and the M53 motorway. Centre left on this fuzzy map. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:Brunanburh Date Posted:02/05/2021 03:03:18Copy HTML Thank you, Mark. I viewed again Michael Wood's "In Search of Athelstan" and thanks to your post I recognized the name of the battle of Brunanburh which I had not before. In this video also we visit to tomb of St. Cuthbert where the embroidered fabrics are stored that I mentioned before. I was just as moved as the first time I saw it. It was when Michael Wood described Athelstan spending the night at the saint's tomb and uttered the phrase "the air crackled with spiritual radioactivity" that this Grinch's heart swelled three times its size. Forgive the digression. Wood suggested the battle took place near Brinsworth. I don't see that on the map, but is it near the town of Raby which I do see on the map? He also suggested Burghwallis. I am wondering if he was close to the mark. "It is forbidden to spit on cats in plague-time."

Re:Brunanburh Date Posted:02/05/2021 04:11:45Copy HTML Brinsworth is in Yorkshire miles away. Burnswark (?) is in southern Scotland even further away. He made that documentary years before these latest findings, so we can forgive him. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:Brunanburh Date Posted:02/05/2021 04:35:42Copy HTML I can forgive Michael Wood almost anything except being too handsome, too smart and too far away.

Re:Brunanburh Date Posted:02/05/2021 08:35:26Copy HTML In the interest of balance there's a rather nice young lady historian who gets on TV quite often - Suzannah Lipscomb. She has the same birthday as me, but considerably younger. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:Brunanburh Date Posted:03/05/2021 09:45:02Copy HTML And a lovely balance she is! I've looked on YouTube for her videos and it appears her "specialty" is the Tudors. I look forward to watching some of her work.
