Date Posted:13/12/2021 06:18:54Copy HTML I have long been an admirer of Brit humor & have found a few choice quotes from Benjamin Disraeli as follows; Randolph Churchill is like a minute insect which bites without being felt. William Gladstone - He has not a single redeeming defect. William Gladstone - Gladstone made is conscience not his guide, but his accomplice. William Gladstone - A misfortune is if he fell into the Thames, a calamity is if someone pulled him out. Daniel O'Connell - He has committed every crime that does not require courage. Robert Peel - He is reminiscent of a poker with the only difference is a poker gives gives off occasional warmth. Robert Peel - His smile is like the silver fittings on a coffin. Lord John Russell - If a traveller was informed that such a man was Leader of the House of Commons, he might understand why the Egyptians worshipped an insect. Regarding the above mentioned personalities. Please give me your "spin" on them. I have only heard of Disraeli the PM & Peel the "Bobby." Live respected, die regretted

Re:ACERBIC QUOTES Date Posted:13/12/2021 06:58:21Copy HTML Briefly - Lord Randolph Churchill, a younger son of the Duke of Marlborough and father of Winston Churchill, was Secretary of State for India 1885-86 and Chancellor of the Exchequer for a few months in 1886. William Gladstone was one of the great figures of Victorian politics. After holding a number of Cabinet posts he served as Prime Minister 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886 & 1892-94 only retiring aged 84. His life is definitely worth looking into further. Lord John Russell, a younger son of the Duke of Bedford, was another figure who held several Cabinet posts before becoming Prime Minister 1846-52 & 1865-66. He was created Earl Russell in 1861. Daniel O'Connell was an Irish Nationalist Member of Parliament between the 1820s and 40s and Lord Mayor of Dublin. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:ACERBIC QUOTES Date Posted:13/12/2021 07:51:34Copy HTML You can always rely upon Churchill for some very special quotes and in the field of diplomacy he said.... Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in a way that they ask for directions. One of his simplest but most devious was when he called Attlee a sheep in sheep's clothing but my favourite none political phrase of his and a most profound one was when Parliament was bombed by the Germans, he said.... we will rebuild her because we shape our buildings and then they reshape us. Isn't that brilliant? |

Re:ACERBIC QUOTES Date Posted:13/12/2021 09:38:59Copy HTML I take it from the context of his quotes that Disraeli & Gladstone were political opponents. Very much so. Disraeli led the Conservatives while Gladstone led the Liberals. Disraeli was a great favourite of Queen Victoria and was created an Earl at her suggestion. Gladstone, who did great things for the country, never received any honours as Victoria blocked them all. Ireland could have gained independence years earlier than it did; Gladstone advocated Irish Home Rule and got it through the House of Commons in 1893, but the House of Lords rejected it. Had Home Rule gone through in the 1890s Ireland could have had a peaceful transition to independence rather than the painful birth it experienced in the 1920s. |

Re:ACERBIC QUOTES Date Posted:13/12/2021 10:21:56Copy HTML Mark - You have piqued my interest. I shall research Gladstone.
Art - Mark Twain taken as a nom de plume from his riverboat days. Legend has it a bow line with knots 6 ft. apart was thrown over periodically by a crewman to determine depth. Six feet is a fathom & when "Mark Twain" was announced it meant two knots were submerged or 12 ft. of water was present. |

Re:ACERBIC QUOTES Date Posted:14/12/2021 06:48:23Copy HTML Gladstone's first attempt at Irish Home Rule in 1886 was defeated when 93 members of his own Liberal Party voted with the Conservatives against it. It led to the fall of Gladstone's administration, the splitting of his party and a General Election which the Conservatives won with a big majority largely brought about by the defection of the anti-Home Rule wing of the Liberals who allied themselves with Lord Salisbury's Conservatives. If you're looking into Gladstone's life take a look at his activities with prostitutes in the 1840s and 50s, it's not what you might at first think. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:ACERBIC QUOTES Date Posted:14/12/2021 09:05:09Copy HTML Victoria didn't like Gladstone one bit, she said he talked to her like he was addressing a public meeting. Disraeli by contrast constantly charmed and complemented her. Mark, was he our last Jewish PM? |

Sixty years in politics, four time PM, a wordsmith beyond compare, a patriarch of the Liberal Party, opponent of Disraeli & even Queen Victoria...................seems like quite a guy. |

Disraeli was born into a Jewish family, but his father converted himself and all his children into Christianity when Benjamin was about 12. |
