100 years ago today, on 3 May 1919, one of the last colonial wars GB fought that was actually called a war rather than a rebellion or uprising, began, the 3rd Afghan War.

The pro-British Amir of Afghanistan, Habibullah had been assassinated in February and replaced by his son Amanullah. He was anti-British and found the excuse he needed in the 13 April Amritsar Massacre to send troops through the Khyber Pass into British India.

A body of troops occupied the border village of Bagh and killed a number of Indian labourers. In taking Bagh they controlled the water supply to the military post a few miles away in Landi Kotal.

Were the British soundly defeated because of that lack of water or was an agreement made to end the war without further fighting?

Embarrassingly an attempt to retake Bagh on 9 May failed when the British commander split his force leaving too few men to take the village. They did however secure the water supply but not the village itself. Stand by for further developments! The war was the first colonial war in which we deployed aircraft on bombing missions.

A much larger force is deployed to attack Bagh on 11 May. Led by my local Regiment the North Staffordshires and the Gurkhas Bagh is retaken. British losses are eight killed and 32 wounded the Afghans lose around 100 dead and 300 wounded.

After forcing the Afghans out of Bagh and back across the border the British themselves cross into Afghanistan via the Khyber Pass on 13 May and advance to Dacca unopposed.

Having captured Dacca the British find themselves under heavy artillery fire from the Afghans in the surrounding hills. On 16 May a reconnaissance troop is sent out which scatters the slowly advancing Afghans.

On 17 May the British advanced to take on the Afghans who were slowly moving in on Dacca. After an initial repulse they take the Afghan positions and drive them off. British losses were 28 killed and 157 wounded, heavy by frontier standards.

By 26 May the British India border territory of Waziristan had risen up in revolt against the British with men of the North and South Waziristan Militia either deserting or going over to the pro-Afghan rebels.

Elsewhere along the southern front the British storm and capture the fortress of Spin Boldak using scaling ladders for the last time in a military operation.

On 1 June the British relief column nears the beleagured town of Thal. It is commanded by Brig-Gen Dyer the "villain" of the Amritsar Massacre just seven weeks earlier. 6000 Afghans block the route to Thal, but they are scattered by Dyer's artillery and by an infantry assault led by the 1/69th Punjabi Regt.

On 2 June as Dyer prepares for the assault on Thal he receives a message from the Afghan commander in the town, Nadir Khan that he has been instructed by King Amanullah to suspend hostilities pending armistice talks. Dyer replies that he will attack anyway, so Khan hastily abandons Thal and retires three miles to the west.

Re:3rd Afghan War

After the capture of Thal in early June an armistice was agreed and fighting pretty much ended beyond skirmishing and air attacks by the RAF. A final peace treaty was signed 100 years ago today on 8 August 1919 - the Treaty of Rawalpindi. The terms were quite simple, GB recognized Afghan independence and pledged not to extend the borders of British India beyond the Khyber Pass. Afghanistan was forbidden to import arms and ammunition through British India and the British subsidies paid to Afghanistan would end. It was a tactical victory for GB but more of a strategic victory for the Afghans. The war had coat around 1000 Afghan lives plus an unknown number who died of disease or in accidents. The British lost 1136 of which 236 were killed in action, the rest of disease or in accidents.
